Offshore cable support, designed to go the distance
Subsea cable routing and protection, optimised for the longevity and cost-effective development of your project.
Cables allow your revenue to flow
For all of the engineering awe that offshore structures invoke, it’s the subsea cables connecting your assets to the grid that allow revenue to flow. Cables are the unseen heroes of offshore wind and wave energy. It’s crucial to make sure they are positioned efficiently, protected from risks and ready to go the distance.
It can cost millions of pounds to repair damage to offshore energy cables. Such repairs account for more than half of offshore wind insurance claims. The best time for preventative action is at the outset – mitigating the risk of damage to prevent downtime, inflated insurance premiums and capital expenditure further down the line.
Utilise our in-house geotechnical and geophysical expertise to evaluate cable burial risk. We can identify the dangers posed from anthropogenic activity (such as fishing trawlers) as well as geophysical and geotechnical risks, accurately gauging the optimal routes and protection required for your cables. All in a way that’s optimised for the longevity and cost-effective development of your project.
Of course, there is such a thing as too much cable protection. Protective measures should always be balanced with your economic realities. We help to judge the burial depths and armouring necessary to keep your cables safe, long into the future – retaining sensitivity to your development costs and advocating additional protection only when strictly necessary.
Our service includes:
Cable route engineering and optimisation
Burial assessment study (BAS)
Cable protection assessment (CPA)
Cable burial risk assessment (CBRA) – pre-construction and as-laid
Depth of lowering (DoL) specification
Route position lists and route alignment charts

FAQs
Does Ternan Energy have the right expertise?
We have an extensive track record that includes the design and management of cable surveys for interconnector projects, design and engineering of cable landfall projects, post-burial assessments and technical reviews for trenching projects. In short: we’ve earned our stripes. And we can provide support on cable routing and protection in even the most challenging conditions.
What can you expect from Ternan Energy’s approach?
Our approach is collaborative: helping clients understand the risks, the probability of cable damage and the cost of mitigation. It’s about providing the clear information you need to make confident commercial decisions.
What is live trenching support?
One highly specialist service we offer is live trenching support – delivering a live assessment of the risk to the cable as first-pass trenching is undertaken. Let’s say it was agreed that a cable should be buried at a depth of one metre. But during trenching, the cable laying vessel is only achieving a burial depth of 0.8m. We can calculate the new cable risk – and help you ascertain whether adding 0.2m of cable depth is worth retracing the cable laying route. When you consider that it costs upwards of £100,000 per day to commission a cable laying vessel, it’s easy to see how this can provide crucial insight to cost management.
